Highly distinguished Participants,
It is our utmost pleasure to welcome you all to this annual session of Mediterranean Model United Nations
Turkey 2019. This year we will be serving you as Under-Secretary Generals.
I am Hana Llapashtica and I am currently enrolled as an undergraduate student in Marmara University,
majoring in Political Sciences. It is my honor to serve you as one of your Under Secretary-General
responsible for General Assembly First Committee:
Disarmament and International Security as well as my partner.
I am deeply pleased and honored to welcome you all to General Assembly First Committee:
Disarmament and International Security edition of MEDMUNTR. My name is Berke Giray, and I am a junior
student studying Finance and Mathematics at New York University. I’ve been participating in Model United
Nations conferences at various positions since 2013. I am more than honored to serve you with my
distinguished partner.
This year, we will be focusing on two agenda items which are carrying tremendous
importance in the means of global security and humanity. Our first focus will be on two of
the most crucial armament matters being,
TOPIC A- The Standardization of Arms & Ammunition:
For the first topic; “Standardization of Arms & Ammunition,” the committee will be deliberating on the
effects of non-standard ammunition manufacturing for all types of armaments ranging from vehicle
operated to small arms. This has been a hot topic with little stage time for a long time due to Cold War
tensions and the continued arms race that followed in the aftermath of this turbulent period. Despite the
continued efforts for disarmament, private weaponry and ammunition manufacturing companies have
been contracted by governments and private buyers, which have ended up not always selling the obtained
weaponry in the most legitimate of ways; or for the noblest of causes.
An argument can be made that there’s a number of varied standards of ammunition for certain models
and manufacturers of weaponry, but the argument itself draws on a lot of pros and cons of potentially
having standardized global ammunition for all sorts of arms. A topic where state interests clash with
international ones, and private company interests are factored in within every step of the way, this topic
will see the delegates debating the multiple facets of the topic extensively. An issue that is directly tied to
the ongoing violence and for-profit armed conflicts, this topic is sure to keep the delegates on their toes.
TOPIC B- Terrorist Empowerment: Preventing Financing, Arms Trade and Enhancing International
Regulations:
Terrorist organizations have long threatened the security, infrastructure, and citizens of nations and
communities throughout the world. But as we all know they haven’t come up to this power within one
night. The financing of terrorism involves providing finance or financial support to
individual terrorists or non-state actors. Some countries maintain a list of terrorist organizations and
have money laundering laws, which are also used to combat providing finance for those organizations.
Laws created attempted to thwart the financing of terrorism (CFT) and money laundering. However even
regarding to these laws, sadly there are still a lot of countries are proven to be breaking the regulations
and backing up other terrorist organizations in favor of their own profits accompanied by the owners of
the major security and defense systems companies. Occasionally, this financial support is backed up with
ammunition trading. Most of these acts are disguised as other aid properties such as nutritional and
medical supplies in order to bend the rules and make it seem like a legal act. As DISEC your goal is to
terminate such acts, separate good from bad and distribute judgement equally.

MEDMUNTR 2019 will be a rewarding experience for all participants to broaden their horizons, creating
young leaderships for the future and to find new and intriguing solutions to many crucial world problems. I
wholeheartedly hope that every single participant will enrich their experiences in this conference which
will last 4 days in numbers but eternal in terms of valueand memories.
May the everlasting spirit and inspiration be with you!
Warm Regards,
